Anti-oppression Practitioner Supervision
Anti-oppression Practitioner Supervision
The supervision session for a holistic and alternative therapy practitioner, or professionally regulated practitioner wishing to work in a person-centred approach to wellness, begins with a warm welcome and a brief check-in.
You will be offered a space to share your current thoughts and feelings, and immediate concerns or highlights from practice. This is followed by a grounding exercise, such as guided breathwork, to centre both the practitioner and the supervisor in the present moment. Amanda creates a contained and protective environment where practitioners feel comfortable sharing their experiences and challenges confidentially, paving the way for a sense of liberation and personal emancipation in their professional life. Enable them to leave their work at work, knowing they have done everything they can to genuinely and honestly support others.
The session moves into reflective discussions where you are invited to share recent or historic experiences where you felt challenged or restricted, particularly concerning diversity and inclusivity in their practice. This open dialogue allows for exploration and welcomes all experiences.
Common themes such as cultural misunderstandings, systemic biases or blocks, or limitations imposed by regulatory bodies that may affect diverse populations are discussed in depth. By identifying specific oppressions or restrictions, such as language barriers, socioeconomic disparities, or biases against alternative therapies, the practitioner can better understand how these challenges impact their own wellbeing and their ability to provide holistic care. This identification process is a step towards the liberation from professional constraints that inhibit effective practice.
The final focus shifts to strategies for maintaining wellbeing and fostering inclusivity. You will be introduced to self-care techniques to manage stress and maintain balance, such as mindful breathing or brief meditation exercises. The importance of finding self-care which works for you without fuss, to sustain the energy and compassion you need to exist as a human and support diverse clients effectively. Additionally, inclusive practices are discussed, with strategies and best practices shared to create a more welcoming environment for clients from diverse backgrounds. Ongoing education and cultural competence in holistic and alternative therapies are highlighted as essential components of effective practice.
These discussions and practices aim to support the emancipation of both the practitioner and their clients from limiting beliefs and practices.
The final part of the session is dedicated to developing a personal action plan to address the challenges discussed. You will be guided to set realistic and achievable goals, focusing on both short-term actions and long-term commitments. This might include steps for self-care, seeking further education on cultural competence, or advocating for policy changes within their professional organizations.
By the end of the session, you will leave with a sense of relief from the burdens discussed, equipped with new strategies to support their wellbeing, and a concrete action plan to enhance their inclusive practices. This session aims to foster a supportive environment and empower the practitioner to continue their valuable work in a more grounded and holistic manner, experiencing a sense of liberation and emancipation in their ongoing professional and personal development.
